It’s been quite a while since I’ve had time to post on the good old Interior Living Room blog, but only because lately I’ve had quite a time consuming redecorating project on my hands.

I wanted to touch on a few areas that relate to this latest project. Being that it’s located in Singapore, the home owner is looking for a very distinct Asian interior design, complete with a wonderfully appointed Japanese Garden and many trinkets from the orient.

The first thing people usually ask me about when speaking of Asian inspired decor is that ubiquitous privacy screen and/or the Japanese sliding door. I guess most people have watched enough Bruce Lee movies to figure that most all Asian interiors come complete with one. In reality nothing could be further from the truth. In fact I’ve seen more Bamboo sliding doors and privacy screens in North America then I have in my time in South East Asia. However, in the case of my latest project, the owner desperately wanted to procure a few rare Asian items – including a few Bamboo sliding doors – and although I thought this would be completely cliche and look almost cheeky, once the space was defined I learned that I was so wrong! As you will see below the door itself may seem a bit cheeky, but when I added the other items to the overall theme, the entire package was quite inspiring and impressive.

And so yet again I digress, I’ve learned another lesson that I was speaking to in this post, in that one should never assume the client can’t be more right than the designer. I’ll be continuing the Asian Inspired Design theme in future posts, so for now take a look at a few of the items I have included in this post, they are all things that I’ve picked up for my latest home project. If you think they would be great for your own space you can click on the pictures to purchase them from the wonderful world of Amazon. Did I mention already that Amazon sells EVERYTHING? Well if I did, you should still click the links to just glance at the enormous savings shopping there represents. I’ve saved clients bundles of cash shopping there, and I recommend you do as well. When I look for bargains, or rare and hard to find items – especially on trinkets that would otherwise cost an arm and a leg, it’s off to Amazon I often go. Don’t write off Ikea either, depending on the requirements of the design space you can get some real deals that won’t cheapen your overall look.

  1. George Polley Said,

Since I live in Sapporo, Japan, I have a special fondness for Japanese styles. Two rooms in our “mansion” (about the size of a two-car garage in Seattle, where we used to live) are tatami rooms, and have the original tatami flooring. We took the carpet out of one of the rooms, and will the second sometime this year.

Oh: I think you ran across me through my blog, which is http://www.tostadaspeaks.blogspot.com, where I’m known as “Toasty” Tostada. I’m also an author and poet.

  2. Furniture Said,

The ICFF is also running Japan by Design, a special gallery including work by 17 manufacturers designed to give the lowdown on the current furniture trends in the Asian country.

  3. Kevin@Bedside Drawers Said,

I love the 3 chests in the third pic. Can you tell me where they are available to buy. I’m in the UK?

  4. Peter Gibson Said,

Hi Kevin, sorry for the late reply but business has been booming for the company as of late. I guess the recession hasn’t stopped people from wanting their reno work finished lol!

You can simply click on the picture in the post and it will take you directly to the sale page for that chests. They are available at Amazon – via that link, and yes – they are really very attractive additions to an Asian themed room. I was quite surprised to find that they stand out even further in real life, much more striking than the picture allows. You’ll certainly be pleased should you purchase. :)

    Cheers!

  5. Peter Gibson Said,

Kevin, upon further inspection it seems Amazon has sold out of that particular item. I will certainly update this post now to reflect that. Bloody shame considering – but then again I can see why they are sold out. I’ll try to add some more goodies once I can get to my Asian Inspired Design series – which is tragically overdue on the blog.

    Cheers!

  9. Väggklockor Said,

The picture of the buddhas is really cool – peaceful but strong :-)

  10. Peter Gibson Said,

@Vagglockor, yep that is a really incredible print. If I’m not mistaken the picture was taken in Thailand. A great accent for any Asian inspired decor. Unfortunately these links are old and not working, which I’ve just realized. I’ll be updating them now (runs away embarrassed ;) ) so check back when you can.

  11. Peter Gibson Said,

UPDATE: The links are all working now, and even though the last picture seems to have found a page location of it’s own choosing – I’ll leave it alone. Wouldn’t want to disturb the ghosts of the Ming Dynasty ;)
